"Hatticus" chicken family portraits 6x8 Oil by Mn Artist Joni Finnegan

Winter in the midwest provides artists with splendid uninterrupted time creating. In my case that means painting in my studio,- finally getting thru those reference sketches and photos that were set aside for quieter days. I live in the country were its possible to be snowed in for weeks at a time, getting out on snowshoes to take care of my chickens. Some days they are my "social outing" I talk to them and they communicate with body language and vocal chattering. Good inspiration for fun little paintings- this one no exception. Hatticus has great personality- one of several "family Portraits" I've done this week. Enjoy!

Happy chickens live here! Free roaming during the day, as evening settles in they head into their coop, chattering softly as only chickens can do. An interesting challenge, to paint these colorful chickens in shadows with a bright sun behind them, highlighting only the outside images of their feathers.
