Sunflower In A Bottle - original sunflower painting

Sunflowers always seem to bring cheer and joy!And they are the perfect flower to usher in Autumn.
This was a single stem paired with some eucalyptus greens tucked away in a little bottle. It sat on my studio desk just begging to be painted.

Winter Shadows Abstract Winter Landscape Deb Kirkeeide

Winter Shadows
8x6 Oil on panel
©2016 Deb Kirkeeide

Does it count as plein air when it is painted from my window?
How about if I paint with the windows thrown wide open?

This was painted from my studio window during one our recent plunges into the deep freeze this winter. I admit it, I am not a hardy, do or die for my art, type of plein air painter. But I sure do admire those who are dedicated to painting in our Minnesota winters.

This is a bit different in style for me and I like this one.

I was painting at my easel and the winter shadows caught my eye, so I quickly tried to lay down the foundations as the light changed faster than I could mix the paint. I decided I liked the simplicity and spontaneity of it and let it be.

Petite Bouquet de Fleurs - Floral by Deb Kirkeeide

Petite Bouquet de Fleurs
6x6 Oil on panel

Fall has arrived and in Minnesota it comes with crisp nights and taunts of frost in the air.
I gathered the few remains of my summer blooms and they are residing in one of my little wine glasses. (that's how small this bouquet is!)

I love this little painting! This is one of those paintings that when I get done and take a closer look, I wonder how I did that!  I especially love the color palette with the soft grays and warm tones.

This one may reincarnate in a larger version. Though I'm sure it won't look the same!

Hill Crest - Landscape Southern MN Plein Air - Deb Kirkeeide

Hill Crest
6x8 oil on linen panel

©2015 Deb Kirkeeide

This is another painting from my outing in July. As you can see Minnesota is very green in the summer! I sometimes long for the colors of the west with it's multitude of colors but I confess after spending time in Utah recently with it's dry and very hot conditions, I was happy to see the greens and the multitude of lakes and trees  as we descended into Minneapolis.

I do love this state.

A Portrait of Izzy - Original Cat oil painting

Izzy
6x6 Oil
nfs

When my friend had to say goodbye to her beloved Izzy I knew that I wanted to paint him as a keepsake of their loving companionship. Even I miss having him grace me with his attention when I was over for a visit. He was pretty much devoted to my friend but he did seem to like me too.

My friend loved the painting. As an artist, the most gratifying part of my job is when another finds joy and meaning in what I have created. That is truly my purpose and is the most valuable reward.

To Izzy, you are missed but remembered fondly!

If you are interested in a painted keepsake of your pet I am available for comissions.

It's been a busy couple of months with many projects demanding my attention. I feel a bit like I'm a juggler in the circus!

The latest is getting ready for the Lake Minnetonka Studio Tour coming up next weekend. In the midst of getting the studio ready (cleaning, moving furniture, hanging paintings and planting flowers....) I've managed to get a few paintings done. This being one of them.

If you are in the area next weekend stop in and say hello! For more info click the tour link above.

I've been cleaning house in the studio. Recycling some paintings and trying some new things on some of the more salvageable pieces. I cropped in on this one and add more texture to her wings. I like her much better now and for now she is residing in a gorgeous frame that I've had for some time now.

Another in this bird series, which I've decided to call "Birds in the Backyard" All birds I've observed at the feeders that are outside my studio windows. I think I could do a whole series on critters as well as I seem to have a multitude of those as well. Especially raccoons.

I love the cardinals - always such a bright spot of color in the day!

Lovey Dovey - Mourning Dove painting

"Lovey Dovey"
8x8x1.5 Oil on wood

A friend of mine, who lives in England, recently talked of the warmer weather there and asked if we  still had snow. I laughed. Hysterically.

Like much of the nation we seem to be stuck in the never ending winter. C'mon! It's March!
Spring is just a little more than 2 weeks away and here in MN we are still being hostage by sub zero temps, ice coated roads and 4ft thick ice on the northern lakes! I'm beginning to see the merits in hibernation.

Much to my surprise, the last few mornings I have heard birds singing! Which gives me hope that the weather will shift.

Having been away a bit from painting, I decided to "warm up" with some simpler small paintings of birds. to get back in the creative flow. (No surprise there, eh?) I also have been exploring some ideas for a slightly new direction that I'm eager to start in on. All in good time.

These little bird paintings are painted on cradled wood boards. They have painted sides and are ready to hang as is or would look nice in a floater frame.

I have paintings in several shows at the moment. Lots of paintings - and this little guy is one of them.
He is currently available at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Holiday Show. If you are in this area it is worth a trip to see this wonderfully diverse show. It is wonderfully curated and I am always amazed at the magic that happens between the chaos of dropping off the work and the actual show opening. It is the perfect place to find that unique and creative gift for that special someone this holiday season. Gift the gift of art this year. It's a great time to start a collection for yourself or another.

A Dream of Spring

A Dream of Spring
10 x 10 Oil on Panel
©2013 Deb Kirkeeide

A pretty spring bouquet of warm color for our snowy, white days here in Minnesota.

Yes, it has been a long time. I've come to realize that perhaps January and February are the months
to step back and take a break. I did visit my daughter in Utah and we attended part of the Sundance Film Festival. We heard some good music, saw some good films and I got to visit with my good friend and fellow artist Diane Whitehead. We had a great time catching up and spent the day in Park City looking for celebrities. The only celebrity (that I know of) we saw was Kenny Loggins. We saw his new band,  Blue Sky Riders. I thought they were great and really enjoyed the show.

I have a group show coming up March 9 - 22 at Squire House Gardens in Afton, MN. If you are in the area please join us for the reception on Saturday March 9, 5-9. I'd love to meet you!

'Frederick' - Minnesota River Arts Plein Air buy Deb Kirkeeide

Frederick
8 x 8 Oil
©2012 Deb Kirkeeide

Frederick was a young steer who was tied up outside one of the houses at The Landing for
education day. He wasn't a very cooperative model as he kept moving in all directions. So this amounts to a very quick study of him before the park was filled with large groups of kids.

Each group was guided through the park and taught what day to day life was like in the mid to late 1800s. The best comment I heard from one of these kids was "they sure painted a lot back then!" I guess he assumed all of the painters were part of this museum!

O'Connor House - MN River Arts Plein Air

The O'Connor House
9 x 12 Oil

Another view of the previous house but from the front. I was really drawn to this house and I'm pretty sure it was the color that pulled me in. What with all the green we tend to have all summer, it's nice to see some nice warm color against it.

On the Sunny Side - Minnesota River Arts Plein Air

On The Sunny Side
9 x 12 Oil
©2012 Deb Kirkeeide

Saturday was the culmination of the plein air event at the first annual Minnesota River Arts Fair. This painting is one of two that I entered into the culminating show and competition. It was a brutal
week with the weather being horrendously hot and there were some dedicated painters out there
every day. I admit it, I'm a wimp when it comes to hot weather but I managed to get in 2.25 days during the week. This was painted at the end of the first day.

The event was held at The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park, in Shakopee, MN. This 88-acre living history museum depicts life in the Lower Minnesota River Valley from the 1840s–1890s with authentic 19th-century buildings, demonstrations and a scenic river trail and overlook. It was my first time visiting the park - and I only live 15 miles away! Funny how you never get out to 'site-see' in your own area!

More paintings coming up!

Grace

Grace
16 x 20 Oil
©2011 Deb Kirkeeide.

This may look a bit familiar. This is a larger version of my earlier 6x6 study from a few weeks ago. I was experimenting in textures on this one. Still haven't hit of the exact combination of winning
tools and technique but it is fun trying new things.

I hope this long Thanksgiving weekend was good to you all! I know I'm thankful for many things in my life and a big part of that is all of you. Thank you.
