"The Elephant Watches" by Terry Honstead

I thought I would post this painting so far.  I am not done yet, but you can see the succession of layers that I did in these.   I only used antwerp blue, permanent rose, quinacridone gold, and cad yellow light to do the whole painting.   I already had several layers done by the first picture.  I drew my picture on and then masked off part of it to stay white.  Then I poured paint on it and let the paint run and mix.  I let this dry and then added another layer of masking.  Then I poured again.  I would say that I had about eight layers before I took all of the masking off.  When I did that, more paint than I had expected came off with it so I had to darken some areas of it again.  The two sides that show the background were too dark so I lightened those area up again.  I still have more to do on this to darken the neck area and possibly try to darken the decorative part under his chin.  I will see.  I hope to finish this soon a it is a lot more work than I thought it would be.  However, I am having a lot of fun with it!

"Kinsley" by Terry Honstead

 This piece is started and I kind of hit a block.  I am not sure what else I am going to do on it so it sits in my studio, half done.

I worked on this painting all day yesterday.  It is coming along, but needs a lot more darks.  I haven't even started her clothing yet because I do not know what color I am going to make it.  In the actual picture that I have, her outfit was a really pale pink, but that wouldn't show up so well in the painting.  I am thinking maybe to go with a burgundy or red of some sort.  I also need to put in a lot more darks.

Behind Her Back

I saw this old photo and just had to paint it.  I am putting all my own colors into it since it was an old black and white photo.  I can just picture the scene in my mind!  That backless dress is quite the "giggle maker"!!!

I know this isn't done yet, and I usually only publish on here when I am done with a painting, but it has been so long since I have posted anything!  I just got back from a nice long vacation in FL and am now able to get back into painting!  I took a lot of pictures while I was on vacation so I will have plenty of material to choose from!

Only a couple of weeks left now until the Artists of Minnesota Spring Show.  That is always so much fun!  I can hardly wait!  It is in Hutchinson, MN this year.  I encourage all of you to come and see it.  There are so many wonderful artists in the show and it is always a great one to see!  The dates at May 5th and 6th.

"Geometric Flowers" by Terry Honstead

"TV 2011" by Terry Honstead

This portrait of my grandson was done in a Karlyn Holman workshop that I was at for a week.  I went with 6 other artists from the Bemidji area and we had a wonderful time.  Stayed right on the shores of Lake Superior.  It was beautiful and we painted for at least 12 hours a day!  Ate, painted, and slept and then did it all over again!  It was great!  This portrait was my favorite part of the workshop, but then I love to do portraits.  If anyone is interested in having me do a portrait for them, you may email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net.

In The Beginning

I am new to this site and I thought I would post this painting as my introduction to myself.  "In the Beginning" ia a painting that I did recently as a tribute to my daughter-in-law and new granddaughter because of all the trauma  they went through before and after birth.
