I love long weekends especially at the cabin with family and friends. Sleeping was the number one thing in the agenda and I am happy to say that I succeeded. Second to sleeping was continuing my journey with plein air paintings. As I mentioned in previous post landscapes are not my strong suit, but I do have an admiration for them and enjoy painting them any chance I can. I wanted to try to capture the time of day as fast as I can without having the distraction of putting every hair on a dog.  My goals were to capture the time of day, mood in the painting, and edit my process.

Similar to my previous post, I started with the top left picture with just a quick gesture of the landscape. I only want to capture the essence of the scene and its perspective. The top right picture shows my next step, this stage I only ad the overall tones for each section of the painting. This stage I like to call the "rough" in stage, still going quick to capture the type of light I want, similar to doing gestures but with color. This stage allows me to see how the overall color and mood that will be in the final painting. I want to try to keep close to this palette the further I move away from this stage and closer to the final. The bottom left picture I start to zero in on a section and take it to a finish. I first start with the darker values and move to the lighter values. In this stage I am taking the tree's in the foreground and the tree's in the background to a close finish. Then on the bottom right picture I complete the lake and sky, repeating the same process in working from dark to lighter values.  When all the shapes and values are stated in the painting and close to a finish I can then go around and put the finishing touches.

Here is another painting I did when the sun was starting to set the previous day. This was a really quick painting as the clouds were going in and out. The size of this painting is 5 x7 inches, being restricted to that size allows you to go much quicker.

Lake Windigo's Morning Greeting A waterscape Painting.. A sweet memory of an absolutely perfect October morning. I headed out early with my camera, walking thru the woods, bracket and bramble then waded thru backwaters to find the perfect view when the sun made it's morning appearance. It was worth it all. The light moved far too fast for a true plein air painting so I settled for a few camera shots and color notes on canvas. Then picked it up again this week- in the cozy warm comfort of my studio. Those good color notes made this painting a joy.. my brushes seemed to sing on the canvas. Landscape painting by Mixed Media artist Terry Honstead

This is not done yet, but I thought I would at least share what I have finished so far.  I started with some  papers that I made and some that I found.  I added molding paste and stamps and as much texture as I could for the under painting.  I started with the background of green trees in the distance and then the gold and orange that are closer.  I have a few flowers in the foreground that I had done earlier on rice paper.  They are done with printers ink and watercolor as well as collage.  I want to do some more detail yet and bring some of the trees  forward and push some further back.  I plan on working on it again tomorrow.  Any questions and you can email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net

We had about 30 artists painting out at Parley Lake Winery in Waconia, MN. I love this little winery. Great wine, great people and beautiful scenery. I opted to  paint from the orchard for this one.

The winter sun is flooding my art studio ignoring the outdoor chill of this January day in the midwest. I am surrounded with the results of a month with no distractions. Fresh Paintings are drying in every corner, my journal is filled with new sketches and several canvases are in various stages of painting. I need to order more supplies but just dont want to take time away from this artistic flow. I do know that it's time I started sharing some of my new inspirations. These are all drawn from my reference photos taken thru the years, I have them conveniantly scrolling on my screen, whatever did we do before this world of digital photography. This particular painting is garden inspired, isnt it nice to know eventually warm weather returns?

An unusual year for Minnesota when I can stand out side on the 10th of January and paint with out freezing my fingers!
The light of a balmy Minnesota winter day was already begin to turn a lovely coral rose with the sun lowering in the sky.I saw a magic little vista featuring a clump of trees at the edge of the deep woods light up, quickly grabbed my paints and brushes and painted from the west patio of our home. I feel pretty fortunate to have views like this right from my home, Today that same area is a blur of white and grey blowing snow.. this is minnesota after all!

Happy New Year! thought I would start the year off with a painting reflecting a new day, and a new beginning.

This was my morning warm up piece from our paint out at the winery. Since I don't go out and paint terribly often, I'm always a little rusty and tend to dive in for a quick study just to warm up.

I think I would like to try this one again a little bigger. Hopefully I'll have a chance to go back soon.

There's something very intriguing and poetic about the path leading through the pasture and into the woods. I wonder where it would have led me to.

This past Saturday, Outdoor Painters of Minnesota had our paint-out at Parley Lake Winery in Victoria, MN. I have to say it was a fabulous event with over 20 painters showing up to paint. It's a beautiful

area with rolling hills, orchards and vineyards and wine tasting! 

Add award winning wine, live music and art on display to a beautiful day and great camaraderie,

the day couldn't get any better!

This is where they make the wine. I heard they were serving wine slushies inside - I never had the chance to check it out. Though I did have a glass of the Frontenac Gris in hand while I painted this.

It's all about the journey...

This is the result of a paint out with a few OPM members. It was a a pretty misty, grey day and it was early, but it was close to home and I decided it was time to get my butt out there and paint. I haven't

painted en plein air for over a year. I'm really glad I did. There were only four of us but it was a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday.

In three separate conversations, the phrase "it's not about the end result, it's about the journey" came up.

Three times! That to me, is a definite message from the Universe to pay attention. Also mentioned was the book Art and Fear, which has prompted me to revisit that book. I'm only partway through it but I'm realizing a few truths here  - stayed tuned... I'm expecting a big awakening here!

I have to admit, this Saturday, I let go of the results and just enjoyed the journey. And I have to admit I've gotten a great response from this painting.
