Sunflower In A Bottle - original sunflower painting

Sunflowers always seem to bring cheer and joy!And they are the perfect flower to usher in Autumn.
This was a single stem paired with some eucalyptus greens tucked away in a little bottle. It sat on my studio desk just begging to be painted.

Dog Days of Summer - Dog Portrait original art by Deb Kirkeeide

Oscar | 6x6 Oil | ©2016 DebKirkeeide

This is Oscar. If he were a character in a movie, I imagine him as the friendly owner of the corner bar. Always ready with a hearty greeting, a joke and a mug of beer!

I'm celebrating the Dog Days of Summer by painting a series of small dog portraits this month. Dogs are so fun and full of personality, each a character on its own. And they always make me smile.

If you have a special dog (or cat or any other kind of pet!) in your life that you want to celebrate, let me paint one for you! For more information please visit my website!

Winter Shadows Abstract Winter Landscape Deb Kirkeeide

Winter Shadows
8x6 Oil on panel
©2016 Deb Kirkeeide

Does it count as plein air when it is painted from my window?
How about if I paint with the windows thrown wide open?

This was painted from my studio window during one our recent plunges into the deep freeze this winter. I admit it, I am not a hardy, do or die for my art, type of plein air painter. But I sure do admire those who are dedicated to painting in our Minnesota winters.

This is a bit different in style for me and I like this one.

I was painting at my easel and the winter shadows caught my eye, so I quickly tried to lay down the foundations as the light changed faster than I could mix the paint. I decided I liked the simplicity and spontaneity of it and let it be.

He's So Vain - Peacock Paintng by Deb Kirkeeide

He's So Vain
8x8 Oil on Gesso Panel
©2015 Deb Kirkeeide.

While in Salt Lake City recently, I spent some time at the Tracy Aviary getting my bird fix.
As we walked the grounds, we crossed paths with this roaming peacock. He really did seem to give the impression that he knew he was really quite stunning.

If you are ever in the SLC area be sure to check the aviary out. It's really quite nice and informative.

A Dream of Spring

A Dream of Spring
10 x 10 Oil on Panel

A pretty spring bouquet of warm color for our snowy, white days here in Minnesota.

Yes, it has been a long time. I've come to realize that perhaps January and February are the months
to step back and take a break. I did visit my daughter in Utah and we attended part of the Sundance Film Festival. We heard some good music, saw some good films and I got to visit with my good friend and fellow artist Diane Whitehead. We had a great time catching up and spent the day in Park City looking for celebrities. The only celebrity (that I know of) we saw was Kenny Loggins. We saw his new band,  Blue Sky Riders. I thought they were great and really enjoyed the show.

I have a group show coming up March 9 - 22 at Squire House Gardens in Afton, MN. If you are in the area please join us for the reception on Saturday March 9, 5-9. I'd love to meet you!

Red Breasted Show Off - Robin painting by Deb Kirkeeide

There are many early mornings when I sit on my porch with my coffee listening to the birds greet the day. With so many already gone, the mornings are pretty quiet. In either case I find it very inspiring to sit in the quiet of morning and listen to nature.

I've had it in my mind to write Haiku to go along with my paintings. Should be easy right, Deb?
Not so much. But maybe if I keep practicing it will get easier. This was my first attempt.

I so admire writers.

Enjoy the day!

O'Connor House - MN River Arts Plein Air

The O'Connor House
9 x 12 Oil

Another view of the previous house but from the front. I was really drawn to this house and I'm pretty sure it was the color that pulled me in. What with all the green we tend to have all summer, it's nice to see some nice warm color against it.

On the Sunny Side - Minnesota River Arts Plein Air

On The Sunny Side
9 x 12 Oil
©2012 Deb Kirkeeide

Saturday was the culmination of the plein air event at the first annual Minnesota River Arts Fair. This painting is one of two that I entered into the culminating show and competition. It was a brutal
week with the weather being horrendously hot and there were some dedicated painters out there
every day. I admit it, I'm a wimp when it comes to hot weather but I managed to get in 2.25 days during the week. This was painted at the end of the first day.

The event was held at The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park, in Shakopee, MN. This 88-acre living history museum depicts life in the Lower Minnesota River Valley from the 1840s–1890s with authentic 19th-century buildings, demonstrations and a scenic river trail and overlook. It was my first time visiting the park - and I only live 15 miles away! Funny how you never get out to 'site-see' in your own area!

More paintings coming up!

Grace

Grace
16 x 20 Oil

This may look a bit familiar. This is a larger version of my earlier 6x6 study from a few weeks ago. I was experimenting in textures on this one. Still haven't hit of the exact combination of winning
tools and technique but it is fun trying new things.

I hope this long Thanksgiving weekend was good to you all! I know I'm thankful for many things in my life and a big part of that is all of you. Thank you.

It's all about the journey...

Misty Morning in French Regional Park
8x16 oil

This is the result of a paint out with a few OPM members. It was a a pretty misty, grey day and it was early, but it was close to home and I decided it was time to get my butt out there and paint. I haven't
painted en plein air for over a year. I'm really glad I did. There were only four of us but it was a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday.

In three separate conversations, the phrase "it's not about the end result, it's about the journey" came up.
Three times! That to me, is a definite message from the Universe to pay attention. Also mentioned was the book Art and Fear, which has prompted me to revisit that book. I'm only partway through it but I'm realizing a few truths here  - stayed tuned... I'm expecting a big awakening here!

I have to admit, this Saturday, I let go of the results and just enjoyed the journey. And I have to admit I've gotten a great response from this painting.

Hope you all are focusing on the journey and havin' a blast!

The Mysterious Persimmon

"The Mysterious Persimmon"
6x8 oil
A still life! Something a little different for me. It's been a while since I've painted one. I love the colors in the one and am pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Not much to say about these little fruits. I've only painted them, never tried them. What do you do with them? Make pie? Jelly?  I just find them to be intriguing and mysterious... there's got to be some kind of story in the mysteries of this luscious little fruit.
To all you writers out there - the challenge is on!

This is a commission I finally finished up for a co-worker. I have to admit, this is Lila v.3
