Red Apples

RED APPLES John Currie Oil on canvas 11" x 14"

OK, it seems like it's fresh produce time here in Blogsville and far be it from me to upset the apple cart. Although I suppose that if I were to upset it, some nice apples might fall off. Red ones. With shades of green. And splashes of yellow. I like the complexity of colors here, particularly the way the greens muddy the reds, making them earthy. So let this be my offering for Thanksgiving, grateful for the gifts received, the blessings given, for this life in all its complexity. May we see through whatever might befog us, may we find the joy that awaits our discovery, and may we have the wisdom to find the value in both.

It's that time of the year when a fair weather painter like me spends most of my time painting in my indoor studio. I need a little more time to adjust to the cooler temps before venturing outdoors to paint.
With Thanksgiving Holidays just around the corner, the thought of a little beef instead of turkey is a pleasant break. I did a quick little oil painting "sketch"of a hamburger, loaded with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and onions, of course catsup and mustard as well. Not a fast food burger, that's home grown leaf lettuce, tomatoes and onions topping an organic beef pattie all barely tucked inside a whole grain bakery wheat bun.

Sunday Afternoon by Kristin Grevich

Herd of cows relaxing on a Sunday afternoon. I took a photo of these cows on the way home from the cabin in northern Minnesota. These cows were just enjoying the warmth of the sun on their backs and the hay under their bodies. A warm autumn day!

As The Sun Rises over the Roller Coaster Road

10x20 Oil on Artist Panel
This Painting is available for purchase thru Crossings at Carnegie Gallery,

It's been several days since my last post, a busy week of home painting projects trying to stay ahead of the cold weather heading our way. Nice to be back in my studio holding canvas brushes once again. I confess to having painted this a while ago but decided to include it here simply because it is one of my favorite memory paintings. The enchanting colors of sunrise on my morning walk, caught me without a camera or sketch book. I couldn't wait to get home, grab my brushes and splash the colors onto canvas After Laying down a few color strokes in key areas, the patterns of the corn fields and shapes of the tree lines against the soft blue horizon line and yellow sky fell into place quickly. I wanted to catch the energy of the of earth as she awakens from a dark sleep to the dancing light on the bright horizon line.

"Bananas"

"Bananas"
8 x 10 in
Oil on Canvas Panel
This is the second banana painting i've done.  They have so much character by being bunched up together,  its to good not to paint.  The soft yellows and greens also make it a delight to try to render in paints, they can be somewhat challenging but a good learning experience.

"Hachiya Persimmons"

"Hachiya Persimmons"
8 x 10 in
Oil on Canvas Panel
These are I believe close relatives of the fuyu persimmons, I was very delighted to paint them when I saw how close they resembled each other.  The yellows and oranges are richly embedded in the skin giving it certain characteristic that is challenging and interesting to paint.
Again I apologize for not being so consistent with my alla prima paintings, I'm in the middle of commissions and getting ready for a show.  I guess you can imagine how hectic things are becoming, which I prefer to be crazy busy and hectic than not be.  I don't like it when I neglect on my alla prima paintings, they've become a ritual where I have to do it in order to improve and warm up my technique.  It's a good ritual to have!

Sweet Persimmon

Sweet Persimmon
6x6 Oil
Oh where, oh where does the weekend go? I really do think the weekends should be longer. I just didn't get as much done as I wanted to. I hope everyone else's weekend was longer than mine!

I gave the persimmon another go and in the process I have found that I prefer painting on a linen surface rather than canvas. I always have had expensive tastes!

My latest news is that I've been invited to participate in an oils show in December/Jan. I'm looking forward to sharing gallery space with some top area artists.  I'll share the details soon.

"Raspberry Cheesecake"

"Raspberry Cheesecake"
7 x 5 in
Oil on Canvas Panel
Hi everyone sorry for the long delay in posting i've been really busy lately getting ready for a show coming up in a couple of weeks, commissions and also teaching has taken some of my time.  I'm really excited with this show, I'm working on paintings I've been wanting to do for a while and can't wait to show you guys when they're ready.
I decided to paint this delicious raspberry cheesecake, it was really hard not diving into this creamy dessert while painting it.  I wanted to challenge myself with the complexities of textures this dessert brings, its subtle but very complex to paint in one sitting.

October Jewels
This is the time of the year when anything pumpkin sounds promising, Pumpkin pie, cookies, Bars, Pumpkin spiced candles the promise of warm fires in the fireplace as the weather cools down. Once again we become familiar with the interior of our homes like reconnecting with an old friend. Maybe thats why I am so crazy about pumpkins and squash! My gardens are loaded with them, you pick them, enjoy their decorative quality for months and still make nutritious meals and desserts to fill our tummies.
I love the varied colors of the pumpkin family, whites, greens, yellows, golds and orange and even pinks!
this group has such clear colors, they look like little jewels to me.

This is a pair of Sugar Pie Pumpkins, the traditional deep orange, a small member of the squash family ( that in itself is debate-able, is it a squash or a pumpkin?) anyway I was devastated this summer when I found out that canned pumpkin you buy off the store shelves is really acorn squash! Has anyone else heard that? Here I've been making my pies from these cute little sugar Pie Pumpkins. So this year, I am going to test the difference between a squash pie and a pumpkin pie , side by side. I am sure I will have a few friends willing to help out with the tasting.

Sunlight Glow Across the Meadow

The lovely Autumn colors of the trees across the wild grassy meadow seem warm and inviting, a simple delusion because it was cold and windy the day I stood outdoors and did a quick plein air sketch. Mittens, stocking hat and two coats to keep me going. It was misting when I began, the clouds quickly cleared and a warm light emerged across the meadow, causing me to quickly finish up enough markings on the dreary misty painting, make quick notes of the new lights, photograph and move on. This painting is a studio piece , I discarded the the plein air sketch after using it as a reference.

OLD FRIEND: Part II: Ala Prima vs. Photoshop

Old Friend
John Currie
oil on panel
9" x 12"

OK, OK, don't have a cow. I usually paint plein air and ala prima--once I put down my paint brushes and my Open Box M pochade box and easel are packed away, I'm done. The painting is finished. I'm an ala prima prima donna. Every now and then, though, I find myself in a situation as I did with the original version of this painting (shown below). It just isn't right. It doesn't frost my cookie.

So I dug up a photo which I took on location for reference and popped it up on my monitor (photos displayed on even an average monitor are a much better representation of actual nature than any print). Then, I took my scan of the original painting into Photoshop (gasp!) and played around with some options. Using top-secret technology stolen from the Russians, I made a rough modification using the scan as the background. I warmed up the hay in the barn behind the truck (in order to better separate the truck from the background), cut in some dry, straw-colored grass and dirt in the foreground (both to better capture the essence of what I actually saw) and to provide more interest in the foreground, gently leading the eye in from the left edge towards the truck) and chose to paint in sky behind the fence and tree at left. I liked the results, so I went back to the original painting, put it back on my easel, and painted the changes in oil.

There is a great book with a great title by a great graphic designer, Bob Gill: "Forget All the Rules in Graphic Design (Including All the Ones in This Book)". That's pretty much how I feel about art and the process. Love it. Or play with it, toss it around, give it a good massage.

I took it back into the studio. I turned my back on ala prima. So let the storms of protest begin.

OLD FRIEND: Part I

John Currie
9" x 12"
Oil on linen panel

This great old truck is resting by a hay barn on the back edges of a ranch in the Wyoming Rockies. What's not to like? It was painted ala prima plein air, which is not while eating an Italian casserole, but painted in one sitting outside on location. I liked the truck. I enjoyed making the painting. But the painting doesn't hang together the way I'd like. There was more variety in the foreground than what I painted--not that one has to be painfully faithful to what one sees--and the distant hills beyond the fence just seem a little dull and mossy. Hmmmm. What to do, what to do?...

"Radishes"

"Radishes"
8 x 10 in
Oil on Canvas Panel
I haven't painted these little guys in a while and they're always a challenge to paint, especially in one sitting.  I wanted to incorporate more of the leaves in this painting and give it a gestural quality.  It's interesting painting greens and reds together since they are complimentary colors, I like how they play against each other in this painting.
